Reminder - We will be placing approximately 165 Grave Specific Wreaths on Sunday, December 20, 2020. We will be joined by a Unit of the Young Marines.
Let's meet at the Fort Logan Visitors Center by 10:30AM in order to discuss our plans and to distribute grave location information. We should be underway before 11:00AM. The current weather forecast calls for a high of 52 degrees. It should be in the mid 40s when we begin, at 11:00AM.
Please bring your work gloves and remember that we will be required to wear facial coverings while we are on the Fort Logan Cemetery grounds.
Following is the post that would be made under normal circumstances. This year, if there is a Ceremony prior to the placement of the Wreaths, it will be virtual. Also, still to be determined, Wreath placement may be extended over several days in order to insure Coronavirus directives can be more easily maintained. Complete schedule details will be added once they become firm.
On December 19, 2020, Wreaths will be placed on the graves of Military Heroes, all across the United States of America. Again this year, the Patriot Guard Riders of Colorado has signed up to be a fundraising group in order to assist in the sponsorship of Wreaths. This arrangement is beneficial for two outstanding organizations. For each $15.00 Wreath purchased through Wreaths Across America, $10.00 will go toward the purchase of the Wreath and the Colorado PGR will receive a $5.00 donation for each Wreath sponsored.
To sponsor a Wreath, the website is www.wreathsacrossamerica.org. Once you sign in, you can opt to donate, volunteer or you can do both. You don't necessarily have to volunteer through this website if you want to place Wreaths on December 19th. If you wish to sponsor a Wreath using the Colorado PGR Fundraising Group (CO0070P), please click on the following link: https://wreathsacrossamerica.org/CO0070P. Once you sponsor a Wreath using CO0070P, you can request placement at either Fort Logan National Cemetery, Pikes Peak National Cemetery or Fort Lyon National Cemetery.
Also, in Grand Junction, the Colorado PGR has been a fundraising group for a number of years. If you choose to sponsor Wreaths for the Western Colorado Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Grand Junction, please enter CO0003.
If any of you have questions or problems, please contact me at 303-518-8790 or jwherst@aol.com. Whether you decide to use the Colorado PGR or any other fundraising group, the obvious goal is to place as many wreaths as possible and your sponsorship is greatly appreciated. Please use the same contact information if you are not able to attend on December 19th and wish to have a Wreath placed on a specific grave. Simply provide the full name of the Veteran, the Cemetery section and site number.
For those who plan to help with the placement of the Wreaths on December 19th, there is a brief ceremony when each Wreath is placed. Once placed, the name the Veteran is spoken and either a hand salute or hand over the heart is rendered.
The deadline for ordering a Wreath for placement on December 19th will be Monday, November 30, 2020.
Thank you for your past and continued support.
Jim Herstein
One point of clarification for the placing of wreaths, today. Although limited reservations were available on Wednesday through Saturday, a reserved slot is not required, today. Sponsorship Groups, such as the PGR, will be placing their grave specific wreaths. Lists will be available for grave specific wreaths, by section, in order to avoid constant crossing of paths during the wreath placement process.
A reminder to have your facial covering in place while on Fort Logan National Cemetery grounds.
Thanks to all who are able to participate. See you later this morning.

Wreaths will be placed over a four day period, December 16th through December 19th. Reservations will be required. The past two years have seen the placing of approximately 20,000 wreaths, each of those years, with as many as 4,000 volunteers. The number of wreaths sponsored, in 2020, will likely be greatly reduced. The number of sponsored wreaths, to date, is 3,500. The number of volunteers allowed over the four day period will be limited to 200 (50 per day). All of the time slots have already been reserved. I feel fortunate that we, the Colorado PGR, was able to secure twelve of the one hour time slots. We have the following volunteer opportunities:
December 16th from Noon until 1:00PM (One available)
December 16th from 1:00PM until 2:00PM (Three available)
December 16th from 2:00PM until 3:00PM (Three available)
December 17th from Noon until 1:00PM (Five available)
If you are able to assist with the placing of Grave Specific wreaths, please post your time and date preference by Friday, November 20, 2020. If we are not able to fill our twelve volunteer slots, I would like to turn them back so they can be reassigned. We will have a total of about 140 Grave Specific wreaths to place.
I will be there.
The Wreaths Across America Event at Fort Logan National Cemetery will have significant changes, this year, which will incorporate Coronavirus safety measures. The Ceremony will be virtual and can be viewed via cell phone or on line. The placing of Wreaths will take place over a four day period and reservations will be required with tickets issued for specific time slots. I am hoping to be able to obtain tickets for all of our members who are willing and able to participate. If you plan to volunteer to place wreaths, please let me know as soon as you can. Also, if you have or will be sponsoring wreaths that you wish to have placed on specific graves, please provide the following information as soon as possible:
Full Name of Veteran
Section and Grave Number
My contact information is jwherst@aol.com
Please note that facial coverings will be required during the entire time that volunteers are on the Fort Logan National Cemetery grounds for the honorable mission of placing the wreaths.
